SAIC appears to be taking up solid-state battery development again. Local news outlets now see the first series EV with the new technology rolling off the assembly lines in China in two years.

CN EV reports from a recent SAIC investor survey that the company announced plans for a solid-state battery model for 2025. More details remain unknown.

SAIC reportedly set up a joint laboratory with the solid-state battery specialist ChingTao Energy last year. At the time, the car company targeted using solid-state batteries in one of its electric models as early as 2023.

At the time, SAIC’s goal was to enable a range of over 1,000 kilometres with the new batteries according to Chinese standards.

SAIC and ChingTao also published some critical data on the planned solid-state batteries, such as the targeted range and a 4C fast-charging capability. C refers to the battery’s charging multiplier, and 4C means that the battery could theoretically be fully charged in a quarter of an hour.

However, the partners still have not provided any information on the type of solid-state technology – not everything that is described as a solid-state battery actually brings the hoped-for advantages in terms of costs.

Based on the range target, it can be assumed that SAIC and ChingTao want to increase the energy density, and safety and service life are also to be improved.

The lab will also develop solid-state battery integration technology to accelerate mass production, SAIC said.

ChingTao started constructing a solid-state battery plant in March 2022 in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, designed for an annual capacity of 10 GWh.

This is the company’s second factory after a battery production line with a yearly total of 1 GWh online since 2020.

SAIC is not only active in China but also in Europe and the UK, most notably through its Maxus electric vans and the MG brand.
